In response to growing demand for fuel assistance, state officials are working to ensure the increased Liheap funding is accessible to as many families as possible. Some states, such as New Hampshire, have reported over a 25% increase in demand for assistance. The increase in demand is a product of recent economic difficulties, as well as wider allowances to household incomes.
Many states are expecting the incoming Obama administration will increase the funding for weatherization and energy efficiency programs. Programs ranging from home energy audits to installation of solar panels could both save families on energy bills, as well as reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
