The Vermont state administered Seasonal Energy Assistance Program has reported an increase in demand of over 25% relative to last year. State agencies reported receiving over 32,000 applications to distribute over $35 million in LIHEAP funding. The state expects to help over 6,000 home owners at an average grant reward over $1,500 per household.
To ensure the state is able to help those most in need, the Human Services department is accepting phone applications from seniors over 60. The private Share Heat grant program from Vermont Public Services provides funding for energy assistance as well as upgrades to home heating systems, along with the Neighbor In Need program from the state Fuel Dealers as the private sector is playing a crucial role in helping to meet demand.
